Modern Sampler :: Borders and Applique

Whoa. Borders have not even been a consideration for the majority of my work the last few years, but Yoshiko Jinzenji's Modern Sampler Quilt calls for them. Since I really wanted my quilt bigger than the 12 blocks would give (36" x 48"), there really was no question this time.

What fabric was in question though, and I hadn't really given it much thought yet when I happened upon a favorite Zen Chic print from Modern Background - Paper, and the decision was made.

So the borders are on, bringing the quilt to 51" x 65", and now I'm working on the applique. There are a dozen pieces to be added - ranging from 1/2" x 1 1/2" to 2" x 20", including one very oddly-shaped, which I've already successfully sewn on. yay.

So as I stitch on the remaining bits, I'm mulling over what kind of quilting I might want to do. Suggestions welcome!

  4. So how big did the border bring the quilt top up to? I think the borders help define the intricacy of the piecing. I definitely look forward to seeing more as you finish this project. :)

  6. Bravo for sticking to this and creating a very beautiful quilt. I admit I have the pattern and was planning to do the quilt along but stopped short after taking out the pattern and drawing out my first template freezer paper paper where the lines were not straight on the pattern. I was going to improv but sort of packed all back together and set it aside for another time. Yours is so lovely it almost makes me want to give it a go now...almost. :)

  8. This turned out gorgeous! The borders work great for the center. And I especially love the way its off-set. Quilting...I am no help in that department! Sorry!

  11. This is looking amazing! I completely agree with you on borders. Sometimes I try asymmetrical borders to expand a quilt. And applique also! Wow!
