10 Years

It's hard to know how to even start a post about having blogged for 10 whole years, except to say I never would have guessed it would still be a consistent routine for me. We all know that blogs have become a little passé for some; so many seem to prefer the spontaneity and speed of Instagram. I get that, I really do, as I love it too. But the blog here still feels like my creative home. I find it much easier to 'speak' and even 'show and tell' than I do on other platforms, including in-person. Plus I really love the history I've been able to record here.

As I look back at my very early posts, I recall that in my first months as a quilt-blogger, I joined my first quilt-along; took a machine-quilting class, as I'd only ever hand-quilted before; and made my first solid quilt. My stash consisted only of project leftovers, I had just discovered the hera marker, and 'improv' was not in my vocabulary yet.

Socken

By year's end, everything had changed, it seemed. "Blogging has spurred me into production-mode, learning new techniques, experimenting with new fabrics, just in general thinking about the process a whole lot more!" And as you all know, that has pretty much been the story of the last ten years.

The joy I find in creating has indeed grown exponentially through sharing together and being in community with you. Every day I find fresh inspiration as well as generous affirmation, and together, they spur me on.

So I'd just like to say thank you for being here, year in and year out. You've added such joy to my days, and allowed my creative world to grow so big; and at the same time, so personal. I really can't thank you enough.

All quilts shown were created in 2011.

  1. Congratulations 💐! Thank you for continuing to share. Blogs allow for so much more depth than our beloved insta.

  3. Happy 10 year blog-iversary, Debbie. I agree that my blog feels like home to me; if nothing else, I know the content is there and won't some day vanish should the platform be shuttered (the only way that will happen if I choose to do that on my blog)... but I digress. I'm thankful for all you share here and I look forward to continuing to see you quilt and try new things!

  4. As I started reading my first thought was "oh not she's quitting" thank goodness that wasn't the case. Keep up the good work. I have learned a lot and gotten a lot of good ideas from it.

  5. Congratulations on 10 years! I enjoy seeing your projects and learning from you. Blogs are my favourite as they provide so much more detail than a picture on instagram.

  6. My first blog post was 8/22/2008, so into my 13th year! Some years have been VERY lean (I think 2012 only had 2 posts but that was the year DH passed away) and some have been full. I still enjoy reading blogs and keeping track of things on my own blog. Every time I see a pic of Swoon, it reminds me that I need to make one (have wanted to since it first debuted).

  7. Love seeing your lovely quilts from the start of your blogging journey. I didn't start 'really' quilting till 2013, and am so glad I found your blog. I'm still more the traditional quilter, but love seeing all the improv quilts you make and the ideas and creativity behind them. Thank you for not stopping your blog posts :)!

  8. Congrats! I can't believe you've been doing this consistently for 10 years- not one but 2 blogs! You are right that it is like a diary or journal- I do feel that way when I look back at my posts too. Here's to another 10 years!

  9. I so wish I had found your blog years ago. But I have now. And I so enjoy your posts—they inspire me, for sure. It’s all a good journey. I, too, have blogged for many years now, and I agree that I like the space to share and to think—though I also like the more “immediate” forms of sharing as well. It’s all good.

  16. Awesome to have a decade of blogging under your belt! Yay! I am in 100 percent agreement about why we continue to write blog posts. This space is much more open for conversation, feedback, and general good dialogue with like-minded people. And the relationships! Each comment can be so much more personal than on Instagram. Even when it's tough finding time to write posts, it's therapeutic to do so, as I have learned. I'm sending good wishes as you enter your SECOND decade! Whoo-hoo!

  17. I too like the blogging format. To me its like quilting with a friend. Instagram i like but its more like going thru a photoalbum to me.

  20. Congrats on 10 years!! I agree 100% with you about blogging - I’ve been blogging for almost 11 years now and although the frequency of my posts has varied through the years, I’m so glad I have all those posts to look back on. And I’m grateful for all the bloggers out there like you who continue to share. I just don’t know what I would do with my early weekend mornings if I didn’t have those blog posts to read and be inspired by. :-)
