Scrappy Christmas Wonky Stars

Before the new year even dawned, I'd started in on a new scrappy quilt project. As I was putting away scraps and such from this year's Christmas bag making, it dawned on me that maybe, just maybe, those scraps could turn into a Christmas quilt for us. Inspired by Katie Pedersen @sewkatiedid and Elizabeth Hartman @elizabethagh and their wonky star quilts, I decided to make a few blocks and see what I thought.

I definitely liked what I saw, and decided then and there to make a quilt. Bit by bit, the collection on the design wall has grown.

By now, I was thinking I'd make a queen-sized version of Elizabeth's Sparkle Punch quilt

That is.... until I realized I'd need to make over 250 wonky stars to make a quilt approximately 96" x 112" to fit our bed. Hmmm. Let's just say I'm continuing to make stars while mulling over layout options that aren't quite as star-intensive as the original Sparkle Punch, without losing that nested element that I really like. OR do I just make a lap-sized Sparkle Punch instead? So we'll see! Not quite sure where I'm headed now, but time will tell.

  1. Adding all the numbers up can be daunting, but it looks like you are having fun and the stars are still multiplying! I wonder if groupings or constellations with more negative space can be formed once you reach the limit of your interest or fabric stash on the stars? Regardless of what you decide, I look forward to seeing what you choose and create!

  2. I've always wanted to try this pattern. Love stars!
Thanks, You've inspired me to do something like this with my scraps. Maybe with just a bit more negative space .

    1. oh good! I think I've decided to just follow the pattern and make a lap quilt. Though I do like the idea of more negative space!

  4. I've made a few wonky star quilts (pretty much all of them have been quilts of valor) and it's nice to not have to worry about everything being perfect. They're great quilts but not sure I'd wanna make a big one like yours..LOL!!

  5. I recently made this as a donation quilt with more negative space and not scrappy. I used about 5-6 fabrics for the stars. I enjoyed it, but with a deadline I knew lots of stars was too many this time. I love how yours is looking.

  6. I enjoy making wonky stars, but have never thought to snug them against each other in the layout - I love that! I have a mini wonky star quilt I need to get quilted and hung, so you've reminded me to put that on my to-do list. Will be fun to see where you go with this!

  7. I love this design of interconnected stars. I always wanted to make it but have not yet gotten to it :) Enjoy your making! xo

  8. Loving your design so far! I also started to think about introducing more negative space. Like an exploding galaxy with many stars in the center, and then the stars gradually breaking apart on the edges. Excited to see what you do with it!

  9. You're certainly planning ahead! I love this design - perhaps another pattern to add to my list.

  10. What a great way to start 2023, launching into a Christmas 2023 project! I definitely like where this is headed, especially the "nesting element" that you like. Great colors, but gosh... you have a "great" bed too! I think your self-advice is good. Keep going, see where it's headed. Maybe by August or September you'll have enough stars for that big bed, and can make it what you want.
