You should track down two books by Laurie Colwin, Home Cooking and More Home Cooking. They're out of print, but still around. She used to write for Gourmet magazine, back in the 80s-90s I think, and she died quite young. They are excellent but my favourite, by far is very similar to that but predates it by a decade or so. It's set in Italy. It is " A Tuscan Year" by Elizabeth Romer.
