Anyway, last week's cookies went over really well. But I wanted to tell you a side story. I mentioned that the one special request were the salted chocolate chip cookies. Well, I'd made salted desserts before and knew exactly what salt I wanted to use - it's a flaked salt called Maldon. Normally I can find it in my local grocery, but not this time when I really needed it! As a last resort of sorts, hubby and I went to a little shop we'd passed by many times, but had never stopped at: the Sea Salt Superstore. It was unassuming enough from the exterior.
But inside, it was a mini holiday! There was a whole section of bath salts and salt cellars (didn't really get a photo of that). Then a treasure trove of bulk herbs and spices . . .
Quality oils and vinegars to sample . . .
And salt . . .arranged by country of origin . . .
Available for tasting . . .
And of course . . . my Maldon.
It's the box in the middle that I was after. For those of you who've read this far and are curious about what I mean by flaked salt, I made up a little sample for you:

And for those of you actually intrigued enough to bake something with flaked salt, of course I have a recipe for you! It's for the first dessert I tried 'salted' - Salted Fudge Brownies from Kate Krader of Food & Wine.
Here they are, fresh from the oven - too warm to cut you a sample. You can find the recipe {here}. I confess I follow the directions to a 'T' and then sprinkle just a tad more salt on top. Let me know what you think. I think they really are delish - and worth making again and again. Enjoy!

ReplyDeleteI think brownies are one of my favorite things in this world. Can't wait to try these! I'll have to look for that salt. I found a few recipes for salted caramels that are on my list to make for the holidays, so that sounds like what I need. Thanks for the recipe!
