Two-Color Quilt Composition

As far as I'm concerned, Season Evans is the master of two-color quilts. So when opportunity arose to take a class from her, I was in.

For several hours, we explored with just two shapes - strips and half-square triangles. One key takeaway from the class was the concept of careful editing, so we each worked on coming up with several designs with each of our shapes, starting with very basic layouts. I found that harder that I expected!

I shared several other designs on Instagram, if you're curious, but I did get one design pieced during class. It measures 34" square, and I'm looking forward to quilting it one day soon.

I'm already mulling over quilting designs and realizing my design won't make it easy if I want white thread in the white areas and purple threads in the purple areas. (That Kona Raisin didn't photograph well, did it?) I'm thinking this may be a good one to try mono-filament on. Hmmm.....

  1. Mono-filament might be a good choice, and sometimes I find a that a shade of gray and blend in well enough on both to split the difference, although with the stark value difference here (the Kona Raisin does look like black), that might be a bit much.

  4. This has always been something I've been drawn to and what got me interested in quilts so many years ago! (over 40 to be more accurate...but, that gives away my age!) I love 2 color quilts. I have promised myself to follow my heart more this year and make what makes me happy. No better time to start, right? Debbie, you made some beautiful blocks and I'm surprised at how challenging they might be. I guess I'm in for a surprise myself. Looking forward to seeing what you do with yours!

  5. I love two color quilts and your take with the HST is really nice! For the quilting, what about an all over grid with a light color (maybe really light pink)?

  8. Raisin does read as black in the picture! This is a great design! I'm sure you'll come up with the perfect thread to use. I've done two 2-color quilts. I think you might have mentioned it before (?) but you got me thinking about doing another!

  10. Love what you did with the HST arrangement. I think it's really fun to explore simple shapes like you did in the class.
