Improv for Everyone :: Fat Curves & Skinny Lines

Saturday's Improv for Everyone workshop with Maria Shell @mariashellquilts was the fourth one I've taken. I'd previously taken On the Grid in 2024, Perfectly Pointless, and The Scrapbuster Edition in 2025, and now this new session was called Fat Curves and Skinny Lines. I started with a palette pulled straight from the scrap basket, also choosing some neutral fabrics from stash (which I didn't use!).

The first piece we constructed was something I was already familiar with, but I did it anyway - a plaid slab.

We then cut a fat curve....

and had the option of trying a curved striped line, which I did chose to do. Note to self: DO reduce your stitch length a bit in the making of the stripes, as bending it to fit can stress it a bit. Mine worked out fine, thankfully, and with a good press I was ready to move on.

Our next technique to try was adding a pieced, curved component to a half-circle shape. This was a bit of a mind-bender to construct, but was a great way to use some of those scraps I've gathered.

After adding another curve to my stripes, basically to secure them, I was done for the day. Not really intending to keep them in this layout, I placed them on my design wall for safe-keeping until I get back to them. On my IG post, quite a few folks liked the two slabs arranged together just like this, so we'll see! At the very least, it was a very enjoyable workshop, and it's always good to try some new things.

Note that the date and topic of Maria's next Improv for Everyone workshop - Mystery Improv - has already been set, so sign up if this kind of workshop appeals to you. I have!

  1. That's an amazing piecing and color arranging adventure. I'll be by for more.

  2. I was curious when I saw your Instagram post if the pieced strip curve in the top was made as a wedge or straight, and now I have my answer. I think they turned out great and it will be fun to see how these evolve.
