Afterthought

When I saw the Modern Mini Quilt Challenge announced, I looked back, and was surprised I had no mini quilts that would work for submission. So while the scraps from my Pantone Quilt Challenge project were still on the cutting table, I decided to see if I could whip something up real quick. Talk about some fun sewing!

For the quilt front, I created a block design mixing both striped segments and solids. I laid out pieces and rearranged them until I was happy with the layout, and then it was a quick sew to make it into a top, about 18.5" square.

I happily realized I might have enough to piece a quilt back, and that was equally enjoyable.

A quilted grid felt the right choice again, and this time I used just one thread - Aurifil 50wt thread in 1103 [burgundy]. It's such a rich color and quite possibly my current favorite.

There were just enough Pure Solids Dragonfruit and Kona Rich Red scraps to do a quasi matched binding.

Gotta say, it felt mighty good to pull a mini quilt (18" square finished) including the quiltback and binding from the scraps of my Pantone project.What a reward to have just two short strips left to add to the scrap basket. Plus that quick, spontaneous kind of creating is like a breath of fresh air.

W.i.P. Wednesday

I always look forward to W.i.P. Wednesday - I really enjoy our checking in on each other, while at the same time keeping track of progress. So here's what's been going on in my sewing room this week . . .

Completed projects
A QWERTY quilt - This was my entry in the Modern Mini Challenge.  I really had fun on this mini - you can read all about it here.

More blog goodness - a Tuesday at the Table button - always available in my sidebar.

Ongoing projects
Scrappy Depression Blocks - two more done, 11 to go.

4x5 modern Quilt Bee blocks - I've made "Three Wishes" blocks for two of my bee members, three to go. (Pattern by Jamie Moilanen from "99 Modern Blocks".)

Modern Crosses mini quilt - A new project, and I am loving putting this one together! I was debating leaving it at this (24" inches square), but decided to keep going. At this point, I'm planning on another couple large blocks and 24 small ones. (I used this tutorial from Sew, Mama, Sew to get started.)

Upcoming projects
* scrappy Metrolink
a zip pouch w/o zipper tabs - want to know this way too
* A Christmas quilt to coordinate with my tree skirt
* "On a Whim
* Table runner for my cousin
* Pattern for Mango
* A light box
* Quilts for siblings #2 and #3

A QWERTY Quilt

Modern Mini Challenge

Lightbulb! I'd been mulling over what to make for the Modern Mini Challenge sponsored by Ellison Lane Quilts, and then it hit me. It was an idea I'd had for a while, but I'd never spent the brain power to pull it all together, though I couldn't seem to let it go either. We all know the asterisk block . . .
and you might have seen a pound symbol block . . .
Well what about the other special symbols on the QWERTY keyboard?
It only make sense, doesn't it?
So I went at it - piecing when I could, appliqueing when necessary. I figured out each symbol by-guess-and-by-golly, concentrating on the symbols above the numerical digits. The text fabric is Wordplay by Benartex, the brights Sketch by Timeless Treasures. I opted for no borders, and chose very dense organic straight-line quilting, overlapping in a grid in the diagonal spaces between blocks.
The challenges were in creating the various symbols, the bit of applique, and the quilting - as compact as I'd ever done. (It gave the little 17" quilt such interesting texture!) It's nothing outrageous, but an unassuming homage to the keyboard that's been a part of my life for years and years. (Thank you, 10th grade typing class!)
