In the last few weeks, I've added two new books to my bookshelf. I honestly don't buy books that often, but I was super curious about both of these, purchased one and was reading through it when I went to work one day, my coworker had a copy of the second, and after perusing through it, I ordered it for myself.
Though obviously both are totally about color, they are quite different, and I don't feel having one excludes the other. The first is The Secret Lives of Color by Kassia St. Clair, and in one way it is the most comprehensive, in that for each color it explores, there is an essay on the history of that color, overall telling 'the unusual stories of seventy-five fascinating shades, dyes, and hues.' It includes some very unique colors [such as Gamboge, Archil, Verdigris] that I find intriguing and enlightening. You'll get a good hint at its content in this post and interview with the author on 99% Invisible.
The Designer's Dictionary of Color by Sean Adams is similar in ways yet very different. It highlights nearly 30 colors, documenting each with brief histories, color range and palette variation charts, and cultural meanings. It's also beautifully illustrated for each color, more expansive in that way that Secret Lives. Here's a review from SFcrowsnest that will give you an inside look.
I'm not completely sure how these two volumes will inform my future creating, but they are both definitely interesting and lovely, and I figure inviting more color into my world is never a bad thing. If you have either book, do let us know in the comments what you think and how you use them.

Color and More
I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw that there were 28 new KONA colors coming in July! With names like water, sprout, flame, and oyster . . . well let's just say I'm anxious to see and use them. Look here for a listing on the Robert Kaufman website.
And speaking of color, someone posted a link to a list of color blogs recently. Sorry I don't remember where I saw it, but you're bound to find some good inspiration among these blogs, so just fyi.
Can't help but give a shout-out to my daughter Rachel who blogs at Snippets of Sweetness. She recently made a table runner she calls "Scattered Chevron", and it is so striking! She shared her inspiration, the back story, and more pics on her post here. Pretty cool, huh?

On the other hand, I got a chuckle (what's new?) at my son's comment on my recent Zakka project:
Enough randomness for today. Hope you have a good one!

. . . a new comment on your post "Zakka
Along Week 5 :: Patchwork Pencil Case":
"So you gonna sew dad a
pocket protector?"
Uh, probably not.
Thankfully my friend Susan gave me a head's up about Giveaway Day, and now today I see the announcement posted on Sew, Mama, Sew! Giveaway Day is a huge biannual event for bloggers to give away handmade items or supplies. I participated in December and it was loads of fun. (Wasn't it, Marci?)
Why do it? (reprinted from the announcement page)

Participants benefit because a) they get new readers (many participants end up with hundreds of comments & visitors); b) they get potential shoppers/readers; c) they can experience the joy of giving something they’ve made to a virtual friend. Readers benefit because a) they get exposed to blogs with great ideas; b) they are directed to shops with wonderful items; c) they get the opportunity to win a cool handmade prize!
All good reasons, yes? Find all the details here.Enough randomness for today. Hope you have a good one!

Wild Color
It happened again. Perfectly normal work day. Coworkers coming together to talk about this project or that. And I just blurt out to one of them, "I love your scarf! I have to make a quilt in those colors!"
I don't know why they look at me funny when I do things like this!

Somewhere, A Rainbow

I know my w.i.p. list is growing (again), and several projects are in the queue first, but at some point, a multicolored quilt is in my future. Look at this splendid rainbow of color!
These are all the charms from the Color Wheel Charm Swap hosted by Kati of from the blue chair, and I now have one of each! Not quite sure what project I'll use my pack for, but along with the charms from the Rainbow Fabric Charm Swap with Ellison Lane Quilts last month, I have quite a few charms to work with!
this is just a sampling from the rainbow swap!
I'm starting to collect rainbow-inspired quilts on Pinterest {here}, so if you have any favorite ideas that would work with charm squares, be sure and let me know. And if you've made a rainbow quilt, I'd love to hear about it! Here's what I have so far!

Color
I’ve been thinking a lot about color lately. Maybe too much.
Yesterday, when my coworker walked into the office, rather than kindly saying, “Good Morning,” I blurted out, “I love your shirt! It’s KONA Kiwi!” {duh. True story.} Thankfully, he’s a very good sport and just laughed. And in all honesty, when I got home and checked my KONA Color Card, his shirt was actually Pistachio. Ha.
I suppose it all started with the Rainbow Charm Swap, followed by the Color Wheel Charm Swap. I just finished up my Summer Sampler, chock full of solid, citrusy color. And then I’ve been working on my 4x5 bee blocks, and agonizing over what ‘lime’ really means, and ‘cardinal red’, and ‘pomegranate.’ And on top of that, I’ve had my for the love of solids swap partner’s favorite color stuck in my head, wondering what other colors would go great with it. I’ve also joined up with the Dead Simple QA with Lily's Quilts, which basically will be focusing more on a chosen color palette than the pattern. All of that adds up to a lot of color!
Imagine my surprise when I opened my google reader yesterday and saw the announcement of Celebrate Color with Stitched in Color and friends. Celebrate Color is an event that "celebrate(s) the colors of fall with inspiration tutorials, contests and prizes during the months of September, October, and November. Because color inspires us all, Celebrate Color is for fiber artists of all kinds." Very cool, don't you think?
As I've mulled over color palettes for the solids swap and the Dead Simple Quilt QA, I've been posting ideas on my "Color Inspiration" Pinterest board {here}. You already know that one of my favorite sources of color palettes is Design Seeds. Besides their frequents posts on facebook, it's great that you can search for palettes by topic, season, or color. I thought I'd share a sampling of my favs . . .
