Yo-Yos
Last weekend, I had the chance to enjoy the local Mukilteo Garden & Quilt Tour, a joint venture by Mukilteo Way Garden Club and Mukilteo Lighthouse Quilters. Eight gardens and 152 quilts, the complementary workmanship was a sight to behold. I shared a mini-show over on Instagram earlier in the week, but there was one particular quilt I wanted to share again.
It was the first quilt I saw as I began the tour, and I'm so so glad I took a closer look. It was a yo-yo quilt!
With the unlikely but fitting name of "I Must Have Been Out Of My Mind," it was made by Bunny Cummins, "created over many years and hours of flying and waiting for someone or something." At 79" square, I find it extraordinary.
As I am currently working on a yo-yo quilt, I find this quilt fascinating! I didn't know people are still making yo-yo quilts! Thanks for sharingi t!
ReplyDeleteThis is pretty awesome, I have only seen one yo-yo quilt and they had sewn the yo-yo's onto another fabric. This one is so cool that you can see through it.
ReplyDeleteTruly a wonder. I've heard they're habit forming to make, like some quilters mass produce hexagons.

ReplyDeleteI've never much cared for yo-yo's but I sure appreciate the work that went into this quilt. Back in Iowa, I remember a quilter who made a pink yo-yo vest... after telling her friends "I won't make yo-yo's until pigs fly!" She named her vest "When Pigs Fly." :-)

ReplyDeleteThat many yoyos is labor intensive not to mention I'm surprised it can hang straight with no backing. I'd almost think it would sag in the middle. The yoyos really must be firmly sewn to each other so as not to pull apart from the weight. Gives me some ideas for a pile of them I started years ago.
