Sew Ready to Play Ultimate

Back when hubby and I were dating and on into married life, we enjoyed playing Frisbee out and about at the parks in our area, so it wasn't a big stretch that hubby eventually shared the game with our children when they came along. Little did we know then that one of them would embrace the game big time.

In high school, son discovered ultimate, played on his university team, and now as an adult with a busy work and married life, enjoys playing on community teams. Maybe cuz I miss him so, 'his' game came to mind when I told Louise/I'm Feelin' Crafty I'd join in her Sew Ready to Play series again this year, which is all about making sewing projects inspired by games.

It seemed depicting the game through triangles would be an interesting way to translate it to fabric, so I chose colors to represent the different elements: scrappy greens for the grass, orange for the goal cones, purple and blue for the two teams, and of course, white for the regulation disc.

Rather than a full-on tutorial, I created a diagram for triangle placement. This is a great one for using scraps, and cutting 4 1/2" triangles to start, the quilt finishes at 66" x 72" - a generous lap size.

After piecing the triangles into rows, I quilted with Aurifil 50wt #1231 (Spring Green), which perfectly nestled into the grassy 'field' with just the right amount of contrast on the other colors. I quilted two opposing triangles to represent the directions of the 2 teams, beginning at the disc, then echoed inside those triangles. On the sides, I echoed out as well, adding in horizontal lines along every row, making sure there was enough quilting to secure everything without going too dense.

Binding was a scrappy assortment of several of the greens, choosing the most grass-like tones.

This was a fun project, full of good memories. And that's always a good thing.
