Tuesday at the Table

So when did Avocado Toast become a thing? I mean, I remember when I was a kid, my mom enjoyed the occasional avocado sandwich - basically mashed avocado, salted & peppered, between two slices of bread with a smear of mayo. But avocado and bread (specifically toasted) on a restaurant menu? That's new to me but I've seen it alot lately. So I tried it the other night.... topped with Burrata cheese and drizzled with a balsamic reduction. And it was tasty!


I searched the web and I couldn't believe how many variations were posted. It seems to be quite the trend these days. See California Avocado Toast Three Ways, 11 Easy Ways to Fancy Up Your Avocado Toast, and 15 Best Avocado Toast Recipes. In just three posts there are nearly 30 variations! Deb/Smitten Kitchen talks about where the trend originated - in the 90s! Maybe it just took a while to get to the west coast, or maybe I'm late to notice. I got a kick out of her saying, "I wish everyone would stop making it so complicated in an effort to either upsell it." Basically, keep it simple - like mom used to.

Anyway, do tell! Is avocado toast a trend where you live? Do you like it? Do you make it? Inquiring palates want to know!

  1. Avocado on toast, always great. Yes, I'm thinking 90's for popularity too.
    They're always delicious in salads and in sandwiches of course.
    Have you tried an avocado milkshake? Rich but unbeatable. I got the idea
    from a Good Eats episode in which the avacado starred.

  3. Oh yes it sure is, at my favourite breakfast spot. Brown lentils, roasted red peppers, a bit of feta, salsa verde and a fried egg. So good.

  4. my youngest loves Avocado toast. honestly I never had an avocado at all when I was a kid. maybe we couldn't get them in Ohio? beats me

  5. Love it! I tried some at a restaurant (to see what all the fuss was about) and was hooked. I've actually found it's a great, easy, filling breakfast so I try to have it whenever we can get ripe avocados. I don't do anything fancy, just salt, pepper, and some lime juice but I would love to experiment more with variations.

  6. It a big thing here in Australia for breakfast. Smashed on toast with an egg and bacon etc. I have enjoyed it when prepared correctly.

  7. I think they became a treat in the 90s and now are a staple breakfast for some people here in Australia. And like the comment above it's been blamed as part of the 'must have' expenses that keep home ownership out of reach of youngsters (whoops, think I just aged myself!) because they are pretty expensive. Personally, I put on too much weight when I eat them a lot so they remain a treat for me!
