Merry Mix Mystery Quilt

I don't think there's been a day since I finished my Merry Mix quilt top that I didn't look forward to quilting and finishing it. And finally, it's done!

A pieced quilt back seemed appropriate, pieced from scraps and yardage from my original fabric pull, including a set of 'tree' blocks I'd made incorrectly back in week one. I knew I could make good use of them!

Knowing ahead of time that I'd be keeping this one with us, a quilt that was cozy and finished was my main goal. So I went with serpentine quilting using Aurifil 50wt 2600 [Light Gray] for quilting, with 50wt 2506 [Medium Gray] in the bobbin. Lines of quilting are 1.5" apart, all vertical. With this quilt and this quilting, no marking was needed. Awesome.

Kona Emerald was used for the binding, as I liked how it brought all the other colors together. Merry Mix finished at 54" x 66", and is my first quilt finish of 2025. Loved finishing a quilt so early in the year!

Many thanks to the Merry Mix qal host Melanie Meyer @mellmeyer! The qal was so well done, and I enjoyed it every step of the way. Plus it resulted in a quilt I really love. Can't beat that! Also, couldn't resist getting a couple of maker photos with the finished quilt. Grateful for a beautiful winder day in the PNW!

Merry Mix Mystery Revealed

Oh, I gotta say, I really have enjoyed the Merry Mix mystery quiltalong hosted by Melanie @mellmeyer this Advent season. I prioritized it among other projects in this month's sewing time, which meant I may not have progressed on other projects as much as I might have. But it was totally worth it, and I'm excited to get my Merry Mix quilt finished in the next few weeks.

All my blocks went up on the design wall in no particular order as I made them. Unknown to me when I took the photo below, there are also eight squares of solid fabric that will be added for the final layout, making a total of 99 blocks for the lap version.

Meanwhile, before the final layout was revealed, I couldn't resist moving blocks around for a quasi-layout, without putting too much thought (or effort) into it. Even that looked promising.

But finally, the official layout was revealed, and I really love it! Unfortunately, the blocks won't all fit on my design wall in the correct portrait orientation, but I was able to arrange them all as if the quilt was on its side, with the top to the right. SO, not 100% what the quilt will look like, but you get the idea. 

It'll be after Christmas before the blocks all get sewn together, but I'm looking forward to having that done, and the quilt in use (hopefully) before the season is totally over. We'll see!

Merry Mix Day 10

Well you may have seen on IG that my design wall is filling up with Merry Mix blocks for the mystery quilt-along with Melanie Meyer @mellmeyer. Even though I haven't shown it all on Insta, all my fabric is cut, so now it's just sewing and sewing.

Each day around 3 PM my time, I check to see what the next day's assignment will be. So far, we've made 'trees,' quarter-circles, stars, and stripes. I wouldn't be surprised at all if we have more of at least some of those to sew up in different colorways. We've yet to add in our second neutral, which for me, is a dark gray. I'm kind of looking forward to that!

Merry Mix

In addition to the Oh Christmas Tree Advent embroidery project, I also joined in the Merry Mix mystery quilt-along with Melanie Meyer @mellmeyer, a quilt-loving friend in Germany. My goal is a throw-sized quilt top (54″ x 66″) that coordinates with our other Christmas decor. Hubby and I worked together to choose fabrics, finally selecting these five (l-r): Kona Pewter and Quicksilver, Kona Emerald, Bella Solids Scuba, and Kona Wine.

I don't remember ever doing a quilt-along this quickly, so I'm excited for it and concerned just a bit about keeping up. But, the more community the better, right?  That said, I've successfully completed our assignments for Day 1 - some fabric cutting....

and Day 2, our first blocks!

I just received Day 3's task, and I see that quarter circles are involved. Uh-oh!
