ReplyDeleteI love this fabric! As for recent discoveries, I have found that I like to add a bit of hand embroidery to my work. I really enjoy it and I think it adds something special to the quilts!

ReplyDeleteThanks for a great giveaway! My best recent discovery is the seamfix seam ripper. It has a rubber tip that you rub over the ripped seam to get all the loose threads out. Then you can just go over your fabric with a lint roller and it's ready to go. I'm not usually one for gimmicks, but I always hated picking out those tiny threads, and this actually works.

I found out Mt Airy NC has 2 small shops and I have had the luck to visit one of them and they have one of my favorite things -- a scrap bin for buyers to stuff as much fabric into a baggie for only $5
ReplyDeleteI've been making softies with button eyes recently, but I ran out of buttons and realized I could use instructions from an old knitting pattern to make cuter eyes out of felt. :)

Lovely giveaway! I am not sure what new I have discovered but not already shared. My newest thing seems to be instagram, a far easier way to connect when I am sewing but hard to catch up when I am not.
ReplyDeleteI just discovered a new way to do ruffles. Sew a zig zag stitch over dental floss (or fishing line) and use a cording foot to keep the floss in place so you don't stitch to it. Then ruffle away!

I was making oliver + s' Hopscotch skirt for my daughter out of red corduroy. It has a line of buttons down the front to close it and I was really dreading putting those buttonholes in the thick fabric. Then I discovered on someone's blog that she had skipped the buttonholes and just sewed the buttons on through both layers. Since there is elastic on the waistband you don't actually need the buttons to be functional. 1/2 an hour later the skirt was done!

ReplyDeleteOoo! I love those Mirror Ball Dots! I just this weekend discovered a new-to-me quilt store in my area. Well, it is a 2 hour drive, but a beautiful drive, to the new store, and would be worth the trip for me. They sell modern fabrics and none of the stores close to me does. I won't be going every week to this store, but will try to make it a couple of times a year.

ReplyDeleteI'm relatively new to quilting, but I just learned that bias tape (and any fabric cut on the bias) is stretchy. I always thought bias tape was meant to be rigid!

ReplyDeleteI recently discovered that I can indeed fit a full sized quilt in my tiny machine to quilt it. I'm pretty happy about this. But I'm just doing straight lines, I couldn't fmq it.
These fabrics are gorgeous! A fun discovery for me is that I was very much a traditionalist and am liking more modern, which surprises me! It is good to keep an open mind to new things!

I just discovered that Elmer's (washable) glue is a huge help when sewing on binding to quilts. It eliminates the need for pins or clips and makes sewing that last step of making a quilting a breeze!

My favorite new discovery is the classes on Craftsy. I am loving watching the videos at my own pace, watching again, making notes and interacting with the instructors.
ReplyDeleteI know this may sound elementary but I took a quilt class recently and the teacher said if you are cutting triangles to go ahead and "flatten" each end. My ruler was a multi-use ruler and only the top was "flattened." I did and I was really surprised at how easily my seams matched up vs. leaving the other two tips "pointed." ReplyDeleteI'm sure it is obvious to other paper piecers, but I just discovered how it is SO much easier to have a plan for your block rather than trying to wing it. I found the first block I paper pieced and the back looks terrible and a couple of the pieces are messed up. It's so much easier to cut rectangles a bit larger, like many patterns tell you to do! LOL

Making some octagons has made me realize that I could sew much more by hand. I discovered also finally how the English knit! In Finland we use the 'Norwegian' method. ReplyDeleteI just found out about Spoonflower and the option to order custom fabrics through their site. They have some amazing fabric designs on there too and I found some soft books that I can sew up for my baby boy!

ReplyDeleteSo lame - but the extra spool holder on my sewing machine that sat unused for who knows how long - turns out it is great for holding pre-loaded bobbins. Silly me for taking so long to figure that out.

ReplyDeleteI just started using the Gypsy Gripper on my acrylic rulers, and it makes SUCH a difference, preventing the ruler from sliding even a fraction off kilter. I love it! So does my husband, as I'm a dreadful klutz, and now he can stop worrying I'm going lose a finger to the rotary cutter, LOL!

ReplyDeleteThis may be a little strange, but since our front step is crumbling beneath our feet I've been researching on how to fix the problem. I'm so excited to have a stab at masonry. You have no idea - I've been studying types of cement and trowels - how to repair and rebuild cement steps and everything. EEEEE - it's just gotta get warm enough around these parts so that I can give it a go without freezng my poor fingers off. :)

I have re-discovered that sewing bindings by hand can be relaxing as long as I use a thimble and stop poking myself with the needle.
