Still Chuckling

As fellow-creators, I know you have also all experienced the variety of reactions our creations get. I'm talking real-life here, where some folks get what we do (or at least really appreciate it), some not at all, and most feel very comfortable letting us know what they think of our work. And I'm fine with that. But one of those experiences happened yesterday that gave me such a good chuckle I had to share it.

So I've got this stack of mini-quilts that I've made over the last year, and I was showing them to daughter dear, basically bemoaning the fact that I really didn't know what to do with them all. Well Rachel's hand reached out so quickly when I came to the one I'd just created making the organic straight-line quilting tutorial, which I was totally fine with, and it didn't surprise me one bit, since it was her colors and all. But what did catch me by surprise was that moments later, grandgirl reached out her little hand to grab a favorite of her own! And what gave me such a laugh was that it was the back of the quilt that caught her fancy!

You love what you love, right? And I was more than happy for sweet Lucy to go home with (in her mind) a new dolly quilt, knowing it would be the back that would be most admired. It's all good, don't you think?

  1. It's the equivalent of the baby playing in the gift box rather than with the toy wrapped inside haha. Her interest and enthusiasm is what matters but yes, a funny story and fond memory

  5. Cute story! Also, the lap blanket and baby blanket that my Grama made are still my favorites ever.

  6. I graduated from college in 1984 and four of us are still close. We exchange birthday and Christmas presents every year. Two of the other three are very good cooks. The third rarely cooks and only when she can't figure out how to get out of it. After a few years of seeing me give the others quilted potholders, she asked why she didn't have any. Uh, you don't cook. Yes, I made her some and you'd have thought she won the lottery. She's always been very supportive (and opinionated) about my quilting journey but it was so funny to me to see that she really wanted something I'd made even if it was only used for cookies by the slice! (To be totally honest, she's bought many quilty things from me for others - it just never occurred to me she'd want potholders for herself.)

  7. Yes, it is all good :)! That is such a pretty backing too - I can see why it caught her eye - or should I say eyes. It looks like she wasn't sure if she could keep such a pretty mini quilt. Know that it will be loved!

  8. I see this a bit, and it's not just the kids. Many a time, when organizations came to a guild meeting to pick up a quilt that had been donated to their organization for a fundraising event, the charity ambassador would exclaim, "Oh, it's two sided!" or "This side is just as pretty as the front," in reference to a quilt that didn't feature elaborate quilting or a pieced back. It was simply the fabric they admired. In the case of charity quilts, it was a little sad given that someone had spent a good deal of time and energy making a painstakingly pieced top when a backing on either side of batting would have been equally appreciated. When gifting, I remind myself to bear in mind that you can't place expectations on a recipient's response. In the case of your granddaughter, it's sweet.

  10. Backs can be an important design element! I love when the back becomes as loved as the front! Besides quilts can be reversible.

  11. Love it! I made little doll quilts, mattresses and pillows for Lydia and Julia this year...to go with the Baby Doll Beds that G-pa Jer put together for them. Wow--your mini quilt and Grandgirl L are sooo cute!

  13. it IS all good! I love this story! every quilt is two sided. :)

I am using one of my early quilts on my king size bed, face down. the backing is muslin, so it's a solid color, and the quilting shows nicely on the muslin. I prefer that side up rather than the wonky log cabins on the other side, which I used for years! I love getting extra mileage from my quilts. :)
