Find a Seat

It's been a full month since I checked in about the chair quilt, and I finally have a completed quilt top!

Measuring 47" x 62", I ended up using the OOP Mod Tex Flower in Sorbet by Studio RK to fill in around the table and chairs as I puzzled them all together. It's chaotic, and overwhelming, and I love it.

Now to make a pieced quilt back and consider a quilting plan. It feels good to finally have a quilt project thoroughly underway!

A Seat at the Table

A day or two after sharing my most recent post about the chair quilt project, I began to feel what I expected were Covid symptoms, considering hubby had tested positive a few days before. Ugh. Before I got wiped out for a few days, though, I managed to add a key piece to the collection of chair blocks on the design wall: a table.

As I began to feel better, I made another large chair block (bottom left in photo above) and a batch of various sized blocks incorporating a 'new' pink and orange solid, as well as a new multi-colored print.

I like what they added to the overall mix!

Progress has definitely been slow, but I think I'm about ready to start piecing from the inside out and just see where it takes me. For sure, I'll need more chairs before I'm done, but I'm thinking I might better see exactly what's needed as I move along. We'll see....

Pull up a chair

Soo it's been several weeks since I shared my first chair blocks with you, and slow but sure I've been making more. The primary floral print in three of the chairs below is OOP Mod Tex Flower in Sorbet by Studio RK, and it will be featured throughout this project. The solids are all Kona colors. The stripe in the lower left background is orange pin stripe by makower uk for Andover.

I've been alternating using the floral print as the chair and as the background. Do you have a preference? I've yet to decide if I need more than one versus the other.

I'm still trying to make a variety of chair back styles, though I'm running a little low on new ideas at this point. In the batch below, I've introduced another pin stripe print - this time in pink, also by makower uk for Andover.

And yesterday, I decided to play around with scale. The lower left block is 8"-ish, as are most of the blocks I've previously made. The two new larger ones measure 11"-ish, and the smaller two 6"-ish. I think I've decided I like the mix of sizes and will continue that as I make more blocks.

I'm also making chairs that face both left and right, though I've totally lost track of which I've made more or less of. With the batch above, my block count is at 19. For now, I'll just keep making.

Chairs

Thumbing through some of my quilt books the other day, I happened upon a quilt by Kathy Peters of Marquette MI, called "Table Scraps" in Liberated Quiltmaking II by Gwen Marston. I didn't remember ever seeing a quilt of chair blocks, so of course, I had to give one a try....

I had just a scrap of that fun orange/pink/purple print fabric, but a week or two later, I decided to make another chair block, and incorporated it again.

That second block made me think I wouldn't mind making a bunch more chair blocks, so we'll see. I don't have much of that print left, and unfortunately can't remember what it is! But maybe I'll find other prints that fit with it, and I can continue on. We'll see!
