The Judges Say Yay

When I posted about QuiltCon the other day, it didn't even dawn on me that Yay or Nay would be returning home with judges' notes, otherwise I would have waited to share. But the quilt and the notes arrived today, and I thought you might enjoy seeing what the judges had to say.

I think what gave me the most satisfaction was the 'offset X blocks accentuate focal point' comment, as that's exactly the part that gave me pause and led to the quilt's name. On Instagram, with the photo below, I asked, "Xs need sewn and trimmed obviously, but yay or nay?"

I still say Yay and am glad the judges did too. Note to self to keep trusting my instinct. You too, OK?

QuiltCon 2017

Even if you didn't attend QuiltCon East in Savannah last weekend, if you've been on social media at all, you've seen alot of quilts from the show. It's been great, hasn't it? I've thoroughly enjoyed them all. And just for the sake of history, I'm posting two I had a hand in here on the blog.

First was my Yay or Nay, which hung in the show in the Improvisation category. This one has a pretty personal story, so it meant alot to me to have it included.

The second was Stephanie Ruyle's Direction Optional, a Bee Sewcial quilt, to which I contributed two blocks.

It was very exciting to have Stephanie's quilt win first place in the Group or Bee Quilts division! After having my Mod Mood - another Bee Sewcial quilt - win the same prize last year.... well it was pretty cool!

Anyway, thanks for humoring me. If you haven't seen the collection of winning quilts yet, do take a look! And on Instagram, see all sorts of quilts and good fun under #quiltcon2017 and #quiltcon.

Note to self

Entering quilts in shows is an interesting phenomena. It's always based on such subjectivity, which totally makes sense yet doesn't at the same time. The ones choosing certainly deserve to choose what fits, in their minds, the show they are creating, for the space they have to fill. On the other hand, from the outside looking in, there's surprise at what didn't get it. One glance through the #quiltconreject hashtag on Instagram, and you know darn well, there could be a whole 'nother quilt show of amazing and beautiful quilts. They just won't be at QuiltCon next year.

That said, Yay or Nay made the cut. Honestly, it's the one I least expected to get in. But it's the one I'm most gratified to have accepted. It contains a real part of me that the other two I submitted do not... that part that struggled with whether or not what I was creating was worth doing... the one that is a reminder to me not to be afraid of getting it wrong. Ironic how that turned out, isn't it?

Baconrific was really the one I thought had a chance of getting in. The whole 'quilt inspired by bacon' odyssey was loads of fun and provided lots of laughs. I'm really glad I went out on a limb and gave Bee Sewcial the bacon prompt, crazy as it was. It made me happy.

The final quilt I submitted was Archipelago, which was made specifically for the nine-patch challenge. Pretty much from the moment I heard about the challenge, what came to my mind's eye was pretty much exactly what it became. The Bahama blue background was such a nice change of pace, and sewing those wonky blocks straight from the scrap bin was, of course, fulfilling in itself. It was a good process for me.

So I'd say 1 out of 3 is pretty good odds, and considering there were over 1600 quilts submitted, I'm honored to have a quilt heading to Savannah, and it'll be in good company. But even though that feels great, obviously, I'm remembering how it feels not to have a quilt going..... and knowing that doesn't devalue the others one single bit. The space isn't big enough for all we entered. Let's just keep creating. Let's enter our quilts in other shows. Let's keep sharing on our social media venues where there's plenty of room. Note to self.

Blogger's Quilt Festival :: Yay or Nay [Modern Quilts]

The name for my first entry in this year's Blogger's Quilt Festival came about after I posted on Instagram, asking what folks though of a design decision. Thus .... "Yay or Nay."

It was a bit of a rocky road with this one. I questioned myself at every turn, all the while knowing exactly where I wanted to go with it. It's crazy, really, how much the fear of not creating something good enough (good enough for what?) trips us up sometimes and complicates the process. Thankfully, Karen Lewis' words in a guild podcast came at just the right moment. "Don't be afraid of getting it wrong." Of course. How could I have forgotten?

So I forged ahead, took risks, and ended up with an improvisational design that spoke to me, quite possibly more in what it represented than what it actually became.

Creating right from the design wall is often a mixed bag of freedom and frustration, and it certainly was in this case, but I find it the most fun. When it came time for quilting, I used Aurifil 50wt #2600 (light gray) and quilted a very dense organic grid, dense meaning 1/4" to 1/2" between lines. Eight bobbins for a 48" square dense. Yeah, great texture.

Thanks to Amy/Amy's Creative Side for hosting the festival once again. It's always inspiring to peruse all the entries! And to those visiting A Quilter's Table for the first time, welcome! You can also find me on Instagram @aquilterstable, and if you'd like to subscribe to my newsletter, The Scrap Basket, just leave your email in the pop-up box, or in the comments. Thanks everyone for stopping by!
