2019 Finish-A-Long :: Q4 Finishes

Knowing my Q4 list was ambitious, I basically had listed all of my works in progress, which included three large quilts, during the holidays no less. So I am feeling mighty happy to report that I finished two of the four projects.

My Bee Sewcial Modular quilt, a holdover from Q3, finally got finished, and boy did that feel good. As often is the case, I struggled with how to puzzle the blocks together, but once I had the vision, execution was a pleasure.

I also managed to finish my meeting doodle quilt, which isn't that large. At 42" x 40", it was basically a playful foray with new fabric and a random sketch. It held no purpose but a little fun, and I enjoyed that bit of exploration.

NOT finished (yet!) are my Begonia quilt nor my 2019 Summer Sampler, which I'm currently piecing into a top. Both will go right on my next quarter's list. Carry on as they say, right?

Modular Realized

It's taken a while to get this far, and now that I'm here, neither schedule nor weather has allowed for the truly modular photoshoot I had in mind. But that doesn't mean the finish isn't worth celebrating, so I'll call it a day and maybe another time I'll get that photo I'd hoped for.

So my Modular Bee Sewcial finished at 68" x 82". Two of the blocks I'd received plus my own were unique shapes, and the others were all more rectangular. So it ended up that I added to the three unique-shaped ones to square them up a bit. That wasn't my original intent, but it's what seemed to make sense once I'd come up with a layout. One end of Marci/@marci_girl's I did leave angled though, just because I liked the interest it added.

In trying to tie in the orange spots in each block, I used half-inch strips of two orange solids, drawing them all the way to the quilt's edge via matched binding once on each side. Another thing about the binding is that I made it to finish at 1/2" wide to add another connected element to the orange "sashing."



Quilted with a hand-drafted 3 1/2" x 4" tumbler design, execution went really well, though overall it's less dense than I usually quilt. I tried out several tumbler sizes and shapes, though, and the one I went with just seemed to fit the scale of the rest of the blocks. Not sure why the quilt looks wrinkled in these photos, because in person it looks really sharp. In fact I'm super pleased with it. Bee Sewcial quilts are always a special kind of challenge, and I'm glad to have conquered this one. Thanks to Karen/capitolaquilter, M-R/quiltmatters, Leanne/shecanquilt, Stephanie/spontaneousthreads, Ken/thekinglacker, Felicity/felicityquilts, Silvia/astrangerview, Marci/marci_girl for their inspired blocks - exactly the kind of improv with intent I was hoping for.

2019 Finish-A-Long :: Q4 List

With fall here, it feels like we're racing towards the year's end, which is pretty hard to believe, don't you think? Among other things, it's time to create our Finish-A-Long Q4 lists. I'm going to go ahead and include most of my current wips, as I really don't know which one I want to focus on first! So not like me, but it is what it is.

1. First up is my Bee Sewcial Modular quilt, sadly a holdover from Q3. I've put the blocks up on the design wall a few different times, but still don't have a clue how to proceed. One of these days it'll come to me.



2. Then there is my meeting doodle quilt, which isn't very large at all (yet), but I'm really anxious to get back to it.



3. Oh and no list is complete without my Begonia quilt. Just a couple more rounds and this one will be ready to quilt.



4. And finally, there's my 2019 Summer Sampler! I have alot of work to do yet making setting blocks and piecing the top, but it's worth a try.



So that is very ambitious, I know, but it's what I have going on, and we'll see what I can accomplish in the next few months.

2019 Finish-A-Long :: Q3 Finish

I didn't think I'd be able to link up my finish this quarter, as I'm away traveling and blogging via my phone isn't a skill I've mastered. But thanks to a longish bus ride between countries, I thought I'd give it a try.

There were just two projects on my  Q3 List, and I finished only one, but it's a goody! My Scrap-ish Plaid-ish was made using the Plaid-ish Scrap Quilt free tutorial by 
Erica/@kitchentablequilting. It was a great scrap-buster, and though I was worried my scraps wouldn't lend themselves to as nice a range of values as others I'd seen, I'm really happy with how it turned out. 

So I'll face Q4 once I get home (soon!) but meanwhile, I'll link up with the 2019 Finish-A-Long Q3 Linky!

2019 Finish-A-Long :: Q3 List

Well it's time to face a new Finish-A-Long quarter! Thankfully I have just a couple of projects to finish up, since I'm really trying to leave some time for spontaneous sewing. Plus, I'm knee-deep in the Summer Sampler sew-along, and that will continue throughout this quarter and takes some dedicated time each week. So....

#1 is my Bee Sewcial Modular quilt. All the blocks from my bee-mates are here, so I just need to get inspired to start puzzling them together.

And #2 is a brand new one. It's Erica/@kitchentablequilting's brain-child. and I loved it the minute I saw it. Considering I've often chosen to make a scrap quilt over the summer, it didn't take long to plan my own Plaid-ish. I've only gotten as far as cutting up scraps - and that's not even done yet - but it's a start!

So hopefully those two can get finished up. Cuz there's so much more to make!

2019 Finish-A-Long :: Q2 Finishes

For some strange reason, both of my Q2 Finish-A-Long finishes were done in June, within days of the finish deadline. What's with that? Hard to say, but at least I got them done! 

First was Timeless, my Pantone challenge quilt. When the quarter started, I had fabric chosen, but that was about it.



My choice of the improvisational hourglass block was a satisfying one, and even though my palette was quite unique for me, I find it intriguing. My biggest lesson with this one was the transformation made by adding in plenty of tone-on-tone blocks. That really changed the quilt from something I liked well enough to something I love.

Timeless

Then, I finally faced finishing my Courthouse Colour Play quilt, begun in a class with Krista Hennebury back in April.



I'd finished the quilt top shortly after class was over, but it took me until the deadline was looming before I got motivated to get it basted and quilted. SO glad that motivation happened along just in the nick of time!

Sidestep

Sadly, I didn't even touch my Teeny Tiny Trip Around the World. I think I might as well try and face it again once fall arrives. So I'll settle for two out of three and start thinking about what to put on my Q3 list!

2019 Finish-A-Long :: Q2 List

Time for another Finish-A-Long list, and don't laugh, but I wish I had more projects started to put on it. What that really means is I've got quite a few additional projects on my mind, I just haven't gotten them going yet. So don't be surprised to see a baby quilt, a new purse, and more sneak in amongst the following....

First up is the Courthouse Colour Play that I started last weekend. It's currently on the design wall with lots of fabric strips cut and ready to go. I'm hoping for a lap size quilt but time will tell.

Next is my Teeny Tiny Trip Around the World. Considering this one will be hand-quilted, I'm not even sure it's feasible to finish it within the quarter, but one doesn't know unless one tries, right?



And lastly, is my Pantone challenge quilt. I have no inkling what that might look like yet, but I'm sure I'll have fun finding out.

2019 Finish-A-Long :: Q1 Finishes

Yay for two finishes from my Q1 Finish Along list! The first was a hold-over from last year, so it feels extra-good to have that one done!

My Summer Road Trip had just arrived back from being quilted when the quarter began, so it didn't take long to get it bound.

Alot less far along was my I Heart You quilt that I was making for my baby granddaughter.

It was fun to make I Heart You! in a quiltalong, and I was super pleased my finish was timed right so I could get photos in the snow.

So that was a good quarter, not too stressful, with a couple of finishes I'm really happy with. All good!

2019 Finish-A-Long :: Q1 List

Oh my. Last quarter I cut it really close! My one and only finish happened just hours before the deadline! I'm going to try really hard not to let that happen this quarter!

So there are just two projects going on my Q1 list. First, there's my Summer Sampler, which was also on my Q4 list. It just arrived back from being long-arm quilted, so a binding is all it needs. Really shouldn't take that long, right?

Next up is the I Heart You quilt I'm making for my tiny grandgirl. Since I'm participating in a sewalong, with any luck I'll have the top done by the end of the month.



So let's see if I can whip these up in record time!
