2020 Finish-A-Long :: Q1 List

It's a new day for the Finish-A-Long! Begun back in 2012 by Rhonda/@rhonda.j.laws, it is and always has been a supportive community working on finishing works-in-progress, and I've joined in from Day One. In fact, here's my very first finish - a set of color block placemats. Though once firmly blog-based, times have changed, and starting with this year, the FAL will happen entirely on Instagram. All the details are right here.

SO, one begins by making a list of the projects they'd like to finish in this first quarter of the year. If you've been around a while, you kind of know how it works. My first two projects are carrying forward from last quarter:

1. My Begonia quilt top has been pieced since November, and just this week I pieced a backing, basted it, and have begun quilting. Yay! So I have high hopes this will be my first quilt finish of the year.

2. Then there's my Summer Sampler. I feel like I've been working on it forever! Finishing the piecing of the top had its challenges, but it is complete now too, and I also pieced a back for it too. Now to muster up the courage to baste it - which is actually scarier than facing the quilting. At any rate, it looms ahead.

3. And finally, I'd like to add a project that's been on my list for ages... and that's my Teeny Time Trip Around the World. Begun at QuiltCon in 2018, I finished hand-piecing it last March(!) and finally, in early December, I started in on hand-quilting it, and it's going well! I'm about one-third done, and will do my best to stick with it.

Three projects should be easy-peasy, right? I sure hope so, cuz I'm itching to start something new!

2019 Finish-A-Long :: Q3 List

Well it's time to face a new Finish-A-Long quarter! Thankfully I have just a couple of projects to finish up, since I'm really trying to leave some time for spontaneous sewing. Plus, I'm knee-deep in the Summer Sampler sew-along, and that will continue throughout this quarter and takes some dedicated time each week. So....

#1 is my Bee Sewcial Modular quilt. All the blocks from my bee-mates are here, so I just need to get inspired to start puzzling them together.

And #2 is a brand new one. It's Erica/@kitchentablequilting's brain-child. and I loved it the minute I saw it. Considering I've often chosen to make a scrap quilt over the summer, it didn't take long to plan my own Plaid-ish. I've only gotten as far as cutting up scraps - and that's not even done yet - but it's a start!

So hopefully those two can get finished up. Cuz there's so much more to make!

2019 Finish-A-Long :: Q2 List

Time for another Finish-A-Long list, and don't laugh, but I wish I had more projects started to put on it. What that really means is I've got quite a few additional projects on my mind, I just haven't gotten them going yet. So don't be surprised to see a baby quilt, a new purse, and more sneak in amongst the following....

First up is the Courthouse Colour Play that I started last weekend. It's currently on the design wall with lots of fabric strips cut and ready to go. I'm hoping for a lap size quilt but time will tell.

Next is my Teeny Tiny Trip Around the World. Considering this one will be hand-quilted, I'm not even sure it's feasible to finish it within the quarter, but one doesn't know unless one tries, right?

And lastly, is my Pantone challenge quilt. I have no inkling what that might look like yet, but I'm sure I'll have fun finding out.

2019 Finish-A-Long :: Q1 Finishes

Yay for two finishes from my Q1 Finish Along list! The first was a hold-over from last year, so it feels extra-good to have that one done!

My Summer Road Trip had just arrived back from being quilted when the quarter began, so it didn't take long to get it bound.

Alot less far along was my I Heart You quilt that I was making for my baby granddaughter.

It was fun to make I Heart You! in a quiltalong, and I was super pleased my finish was timed right so I could get photos in the snow.

So that was a good quarter, not too stressful, with a couple of finishes I'm really happy with. All good!

2019 Finish-A-Long :: Q1 List

Oh my. Last quarter I cut it really close! My one and only finish happened just hours before the deadline! I'm going to try really hard not to let that happen this quarter!

So there are just two projects going on my Q1 list. First, there's my Summer Sampler, which was also on my Q4 list. It just arrived back from being long-arm quilted, so a binding is all it needs. Really shouldn't take that long, right?

Next up is the I Heart You quilt I'm making for my tiny grandgirl. Since I'm participating in a sewalong, with any luck I'll have the top done by the end of the month.

So let's see if I can whip these up in record time!

2018 Finish-A-Long: Q4 Finish!!!

I was this close to reporting that I had zero finishes in Q4 of the Finish-A-Long. But over the weekend, after letting my latest Bee Sewcial quilt sit all through December, I got in the groove and finished up the quilting. A couple of evenings hand-stitching on a faced binding, and I can thankfully, enthusiastically declare I Have A Finish just in the nick of time!

No lie that I let this one intimidate me, and by choosing to quilt it improvisationally with my walking foot, took a very circuitous route. Unfortunately, I need a break in the weather to get some decent photos, so I'm hoping this one showing the binding is proof enough for now that it's done. This one's been hard won, and I can't wait to share more soon.

This finish was on my 2018 FAL Q4 list. Linking up with the other 2018 Finish-A-Long Q4 Finishes!

2018 Finish-A-Long :: Q4 List

After just one finish in Q3 of the Finish-A-Long, I'm keeping things pretty simple for the fourth quarter. Which actually isn't unrealistic since these are my only two quilts currently in progress.

The first is a holdover from last quarter, and I knew it would be iffy to have it finished, as I was still receiving blocks from my Bee Sewcial mates. But receive them I did and it took a few weeks of now and again improv to bring them all together into a quilt top. Gotta say I'm really happy with it and now just need to come up with a quilting plan.

Next up will be my Summer Sampler! I so enjoyed making these blocks all summer long and am anxious to get back to piecing the top. We'll see, maybe I'll do that before quilting the red and white, I don't know. There are actually two more blocks than my collage shows, and it'll be good to get back to them all.

So hopefully I can make it happen. Basically it's putting in the hours for quilting. Fingers crossed!

2017 Finish-A-Long :: Q1 List

It's gonna be a short list this quarter. And in this moment, I'm feeling really committed to both projects. In the short-term, my Seattle MQG improv BOM quilt top is the priority. I'm so tickled how some skinny improv spike slabs brought the blocks together in a way I'm really smitten with. I have a tentative plan on how to add a bit more to the top before moving on to quilting.

My second work-in-progress is a Patchwork Forest quilt, using the Modern Christmas Tree block tutorial by Amy/Diary of a Quilter. I'm creating it from stash in my own personal favorite Christmas palette. I've got 24 blocks sewn and trimmed, another dozen sewn, and a bunch more cut out - not quite enough but close. I'd be happy to work on this quilt throughout the quarter, in amongst other projects, so that's the goal.

I really only had two other wips - both of which I gave away! One was gifted to a random winner on Instagram - and the other was claimed by daughter dear. How awesome (and freeing!) is that? So I'll stick with the remaining two and hope for the best.

2016 Finish-A-Long Tutorial :: Organic Straight-Line Quilting

One of my very favorite kinds of quilting is organic straight-line, and it's as low-stress as it gets. Though it's even simpler than doing actual straight lines, I've had enough people ask about it, that I figured it might be helpful to finally share my technique.

First off, a well-basted quilt sandwich is a must. Personally, I spray-baste, and that's an ideal method for this style of quilting. I press the sandwich after basting, and also occasionally during the quilting process, just to keep things as smooth as possible. Registration lines are made with my ruler and hera marker, usually about 3" apart, or whatever works well with the design at hand. Sometimes I'll have a project where the quilt's design has seam-lines that will work as registration lines, and that's better yet!

If your project is small, mark all the registration lines before beginning to quilt. On a larger quilt, you may want to mark several, stitch, then go back to mark more. Whatever size project, after marking, go sew along each of your marked lines. Don't stitch exactly on each. But use each line as a general guide, sewing along with a slight wavy motion, crossing the line randomly as you sew. I use my walking foot with a stitch length of 3.0, and my preference is to begin quilting all rows from the same end of the quilt. Honestly, at this point, I nearly always question my judgement on quilting design, but be patient. It's going to look better and better the denser you go.

Once you have quilted along all the registration lines, go back and quilt roughly down the middle of each channel. (indicated by blue stitching) The wavy lines can echo the previous lines in some spots, and move opposite them in others, varying the widths between lines as you go.

Now that you've quilted down all of the channels in the same relaxed, wavy way, go back and do it again(indicated by green stitching) Eyeball the center as you go, weaving along. Nothing needs to be exact.

At this point, with your quilting about 3/4" - 1" apart, you can decide whether you want to start overlapping some of the quilting. It's all a matter of preference, but it's an option.

You can do a little or alot. And you can overlap most of your lines, none of them, or a mix. It's all up to you. I keep quilting down the channels until the distance between lines in some places is about 1/4".

Note that you can also use organic straight-line in a grid, as I did here in Pantone Meets Bias Tape. The amount of 'wiggle' in the quilting lines can be quite varied, though I try to keep the scale relatively consistent within a piece.

Let me know if you have any questions! And enjoy some low-stress quilting by going organic!

Also note that fellow FAL co-host Jennie/Clover & Violet had a similar idea as I when planning for tutorial week. Hop over to her blog on January 5 to view her video on Wavy Line Quilting.

2016 Finish-A-Long :: Q4 Finishes Link-Up

2016 button 250 best

Hard to believe, but it's time for the 4th quarter of the 2016 FAL to come to a close. Your global hosts have so enjoyed hosting the FAL this year. Thank you for sewing along with us!
Before we link up our Q4 finishes, a huge thank you to our fantastic and generous sponsors:

The 2016 Q4 link for your finishes is now open below on my blog and on each of the hosting blogs. You only need to link on one blog for your finish to appear on each blog. Here are the link-up "rules":
  • Add one link for each finish. If you want to link a round up post of all your finishes, use that link to enter one of your finishes and then link the rest of your finishes separately. Please, only one link per finish, as your link is an entry into the randomly drawn prize draws.
  • Please include the 2016 FAL button or the hashtag #2016FAL in your posts.
  • Please ensure that the photo or blog post you link up contains a link or reference back to your original list so that we can verify your entry.
  • Consider becoming part of the FAL community by perusing the links of others and commenting. We all need encouragement so let's applaud each other. The 2016 FAL Facebook page is here and do follow us on Instagram @finishlong as well. Tag your photos #2016fal and #falq2yourname (substitute your name). This makes it easy for us to match your finishes with your lists.
  • Note that our hosts will also link their finishes to share in the community, but they are not eligible for prizes.
The Q4 finishes link will stay open from now thru January 7, 2017. Link up your finishes early and if you have a last minute one, add that one later so you don't miss out. The prizes will be awarded as soon as we can verify all the entries and do the drawings, and the winners will be posted on each host's blog.

Stay tuned for the details for the 2017 FAL. We have another great global community of hosts, some continuing and many joining us for the first time. And start making your Q1 lists for the 2017 FAL, as the Q1 list link opens on January 8, 2017! Another year means more fun and even more finishes!
